Astigmatism correction with toric contact lenses
Low and medium astigmatism the patient is able to partially correct by increased accommodation effort. However, this may lead ultimately to asthenopic difficulties, particularly where increased accommodation improves vision. In children can then lead uncorrected astigmatism with axes inclined to the torticollis and scoliosis due to inclination of the head.
In astigmatism below 1.0 dioptre visual acuity can not be reduced. Thanks to toric correction is vision usually sharper and higher contrast. Correction of astigmatism with toric contact lenses allows minimal scaling and image distortion, improves also peripheral vision. It brings a better quality of vision. Astigmatism patient with spherical correction is often able to read the same line of optotypes as with toric correction. Significant difference is in the quality of vision.
The correction of astigmatism should always be treated very individually. The influence of the selected correction amount has spherical aberration, the previous correction, age, subjective feelings of the patient. For good vision and visual comfort is always important to define carefully astigmatic differential and axis of the cylinder. It needs to attend for overcorrection of cylinder.
